Trick or Treat? Sorting Mental Health Myths from Facts

This October, the scariest thing about mental health isn’t the conditions themselves- it’s the myths that keep people from asking for help.

Misinformation sticks around like cobwebs in a corner. It tells us that struggling means we’re weak, that mental illness is rare, or that treatment doesn’t really work. None of it is true, but it’s enough to keep someone quiet when they need support most.

So, we’re separating the tricks from the treats- no costume required.

Take a look, share it with a friend, and help us make asking for help a little less frightening.

IRL Week

New research shows that even a week of reducing time spent on social media can have incredibly positive effects on mental health. This improvement includes significant decreases in anxiety, depression, and insomnia. And the reduction can be any intentional reducing of time spent exclusively on social media sites, not screens in general.

The week of May 13-20 was chosen to to be IRL (In Real Life) Week to encourage Ottawa County residents to reduce their social media time during these seven days.

IRL Week was brought to you by Arbor Circle, Ottawa Substance Abuse and Prevention Coalition (OSAP), Building Resilient Youth (BRY), and Ottawa County Suicide Prevention Coalition.
